Healthy, happy piano playingFit 4 Piano is intended as a resource for teachers and students. While not a method, it contains technical ideas and exercises that Rae has found most useful over a lifetime of teaching. By establishing movements that are natural from the beginning of learning, progression though the grades is uncomplicated, rewarding, and pleasurable for both teacher and student.
Each exercise is described and shown on video, and explanations for teachers are included in interactive pop-ups. More than 80 HD video excerpts of demonstrations and musical examples show how they are relevant whether playing the easiest pieces or advanced repertoire. These exercises have been used with the piano students at the University of Auckland for a number of years now and there has been a notable reduction in the number of injuries since their introduction. |

Melody Deng is a pianist and a passionate piano educator based in Auckland, New Zealand.
Melody suffered multiple repetitive strain injuries (RSI) due to inefficient posture and technique at the piano, combined with excessive hours of daily practice. When she first sought assistance from Rae de Lisle for her injury recovery, Melody was a diploma leveled student who was unable to play a single passage of music without pain. The beginning steps of the rehabilitation process involved daily practice of careful learning and implementation of the exercises in this book. It was during this time Melody discovered that proficient piano technique should facilitate the pianist with ease of movement at the instrument at all times. Under Rae’s guidance, Melody was able to make a full recovery, which allowed her to complete and graduate from her piano performance degree, and later on to obtain a Master’s Degree in Piano Pedagogy in 2015. Melody currently runs the East Coast Bays Piano Studio in Browns Bay, Auckland. Her students have a wide range of ages and abilities, and these exercises are used frequently in her teaching to foster and nourish effective piano technique, which in turn provides the tools and canvas for enjoyable and expressive playing in her students. |
